Hello Parents! I hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing, Winter Break with your kiddos! We had a great day today. Our focus was on recreating our classroom norms and expectations and talking about how we can be the best community (classroom) we can be. We will dive head first into curriculum tomorrow! This week: Science: Review and continue our unit on land forms. We will focus on how water and ice effects the Earth's surface this week. Math: Our students will continue to work with decimals. Reading: We will discuss the elements of drama and take our DCA on Thursday. Social Studies: We will work on writing an opinion piece for the Boston Globe persuading the neutral colonists to become a Patriot or a Loyalist. This is a really fun assignment and I look forward to reading the kids writing! *We will also pick up vocabulary again and have weekly tests again starting this week. We are back in full swing after the break and boy are we busy! Please look below for this week's updates and reminders. Science: We are finishing up Unit 4 and will test Wednesday! Our next unit is over landforms and changes to land. Math: Continuing Unit on volume and perimeter Language Arts: Biography unit Social Studies: We will be talking about the events leading up to the American Revolution! (My personal favorite unit in 5th grade!) Reminders: -Picture retakes are tomorrow morning so of your child was absent or you ordered pictures that you did not like, send your student to school looking his or her best for retakes! -If your student has not returned his/her field trip permission slip, please do so by this Thursday, December 6th. If you need a new one, please let me know and I will send one home. -December 14th 5th grade field trip to Innerspace Caverns. Have kids wear our class tshirt! (Black "5th Grade Strong" tshirt with "Taylor" on the back. :) -December 19, last day of school before Winter Break. Good Afternoon Parents!
I hope everyone had a great weekend and is ready for yet another busy week in 5th grade! This week: Science: finishing unit 2 on Mixtures and Solutions and will be ready to test on Thursday. Math: subtracting mixed numbers and perimeter Language Arts: finishing personal narratives and starting unit 2 on origin myths Social Studies: finishing up the us regions. We will test on the Midwest tomorrow and test on the West next Tuesday. Then we will begin to Move Westward! :) Please click on this link to sign up for Fall conferences on October 8th. I hope you all had a great weekend and are ready for another busy week in 5th grade! This week we will focus on: Science: We are going to finish the unit: focusing on insulators and conductors of heat and solubility. We will review on Thursday and test Friday. Math: We began Unit 2 today- adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators; applying that to data analysis and perimeter. Language Arts: We are going to start working with words using the Latin root "ped". We are also talking about foreshadowing this week. Our "Manu" quiz is tomorrow. Social Studies: Our focus this week is on the states and capitals in the Northeast region. We will test on Friday. I hope you all have a great week! This week our learning targets include: Math: Prime and composite numbers and order of operations Science: Starting Unit 1: Classifying Matter. We will focus on magnetism and density this week. Reading: We will begin our fiction unit and discuss what's the difference between main idea and theme. Social Studies: We will explore the US regions/states/state capitals starting with the Southwest. Writing: We have started our vocabulary today! We will be studying the Greek/Latin root words manu and pedi. We will work with these words for two weeks and then take a test on them. Our first test will be on September 7th. We will also be working towards writing a personal narrative. We will having our Parent Information Night this Thursday from 6:30-7:30 pm. We will meet in the cafeteria to talk about whole grade expectations and then we will break off to meet in classrooms for the last 15 minutes or so to answer questions or talk about the norms in our specific rooms. For those of you who cannot make it Thursday night, I will send the presentation via email on Wednesday. Happy Monday!
